Our Math Inquires
We are learning to conduct a statistical investigation. First we made a list of Questions around the Living World:
· Do all flowers have the same amount of petals?
· How many people have gotten stung by a bee?
· How much water do people drink every day?
· How many people have animals for useful things and how many for pets?
· What is the percentage (portion) of green grass in the school?
· How many different native trees do we have in our school and how many of each?
· How many different types of vegetables are growing in our school?
· How many bees live in a hive (on average)?
· How many different birds can you find (in a certain area) in our school?
Problems around the living world:
· On the news it said that there are not many Monarch butterflies around this year. How many can I find in our school?
· Global warming is a problem. How long does it take an ice cube to melt on different day? Looking at temperature.
· Some plants are poisonous. How many people eat poisonous plants and die each year in NZ?
· Dripping taps waste water. How much?
· Birds are caught a lot by cat. How many native birds die each year from cats in NZ?
· How much paper is wasted each day (in our school, classroom)
· How many people die from cancer each year?
· Bees are becoming endangered. How many people in our school have beehives at home?
We had to choose one of the questions/problems and find the data.
